In Merri Bright's The Spy's Solstice, a holiday novella in the Lost Lines Omegaverse series, we revisit the spirited Ratter. This 17-year-old apprentice spy finds herself in a precarious position after a very public assassination attempt (which, admittedly, was justified). Facing exile, she must eliminate several threats, including a brooding Pict spy with a penchant for grudges – and a burning memory of Ratter's poison. Their complicated past, however, is overshadowed by a sizzling Solstice kiss and a potential future far more complex than either anticipated. This low-steam story offers a glimpse into Ratter's past and hints at the exciting romantic entanglements to come in the next installment of this captivating series.

Review The Spy's Solstice
Oh my goodness, The Spy's Solstice was such a delightful surprise! As someone who’s devoured the entire Lost Lines series, I knew I was in for a treat with Ratter’s story, but this novella exceeded all my expectations. It's a perfect blend of action, intrigue, and that signature Merri Bright humor that keeps you chuckling even amidst the high stakes. Getting to see seventeen-year-old Ratter, before all the major events of the series, was a real treat. We get a glimpse into her fierce loyalty, her unwavering determination, and the compassionate heart hidden beneath that tough exterior – the same qualities that have made her such a beloved character throughout the other books. It’s incredibly rewarding to finally see her journey unfold in more depth!
The pacing is fantastic; the novella grabs you from the very first page and doesn’t let go. The plot, revolving around that infamous stabbing at the royal ball (oh, Ratter!), is wonderfully engaging, and the mystery surrounding her past and the shadowy figures lurking in the background keeps you guessing until the very end. The introduction of Serak, the brooding Pict spy, adds another layer of delicious intrigue – their dynamic is explosive, and I'm already completely invested in their relationship! The hints of romance are tantalizing, just enough to leave you wanting more, which is perfectly fitting for a novella setting the stage for a larger story.
While the book focuses heavily on Ratter's personal journey and sets the groundwork for future developments, the world-building is still impressive. Merri Bright has a knack for creating richly detailed fantasy worlds, and The Spy's Solstice is no exception. Even for new readers to the series, the world is presented in a clear and easily accessible way without feeling overwhelming. It allows you to immediately connect with the world of Lost Lines and all its nuances.
But honestly, the best part of the novella is Ratter herself. She's just as sassy, fiercely independent, and utterly captivating as always. Seeing her at this younger age, before all the weight of the world settled on her shoulders, only amplifies her strength and resilience. It adds a beautiful dimension to a character we already adored. This novella perfectly encapsulates what makes Ratter, and the Lost Lines series as a whole, so compelling: a blend of sharp wit, heart-stopping action, and richly developed characters you can't help but root for. I couldn’t put it down and I already eagerly anticipate Ratter’s full-length novel. If you love fantasy with strong female leads, compelling storylines, and a dash of sizzling romance, then The Spy’s Solstice is an absolute must-read. It's a short, sweet, and perfectly satisfying story that leaves you wanting more, and that, my friends, is the mark of a truly great novella.
